More gorilla groups in Rwanda

Gorilla numbers increase after success of Sussa group splitting
The number of habituated gorilla groups in Rwanda has increased, due to the existing Sussa group splitting, according to Africa specialist Baobab Expeditions (www.baobabexpeditions.com).
It’s anticipated that the new group will be ready for tours shortly, although it hasn’t been named yet.
There are no plans to release more permits as a result, meaning you still need to book early. It’s also expected that permits will remain at US$500. However, it does mean more options for trekking groups.
Now is a good time to plan a gorilla visit. A glut of new lodges opening in both Rwanda and Uganda has made prices more competitive and raised standards.
Plus tour operators, keen to entice travellers after a challenging 2009, have some good deals.
Baobab, for example, is offering two free gorilla permits for tours of six days or more. Their 12-day Gorilla Expedition visits groups in Rwanda and Uganda and costs from £1,484 per person based on two sharing. Find out more at
