One of New Zealand’s most iconic walking trails is set to celebrate 125 years since its opening
To mark the anniversary, New Zealand’s Department of Conservation is offering walkers the chance to join a special Heritage Walk. Joined by expert guides, the trek will offer a glimpse into the trail's history. The walk will act as a fundraiser towards the reconstruction of the historic Beech Hut. Officials want to recreate the style and atmosphere of the early huts in order to display the area’s rich history. Travellers taking part in the anniversary walk will also experience the reopening of the Sutherland Falls Track, which leads to the biggest waterfall in the entire country.
As well as the walk, an exhibition of early memorabilia, photographs and stories will be on display throughout the Great Walk Season (29th October 2013–30 April 2014) in huts along the trail and at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre.
“The Department [of Conservation] wishes to give walkers insight into what captivates and lures people to the famed Milford Track,” said Ken Bradley, DOC Fiordland Ranger.
“Many enjoy New Zealand’s Great Walks as a personal and physical challenge or for the special opportunities they provide to engage with New Zealand’s native biodiversity and wilderness. Heritage is another layer contributing to the unique character and charm that makes the Milford Track ‘the finest walk in the world’,” he added.
Milford Track is one of New Zealand’s nine Great Walks.
