Long walk to airport departure gates
14th August 2012
A recent study has recorded the distance that travellers must walk to get to their airport's departure gate, with some being in excess of a mile
Gatwick airport in the UK has one of the longest journeys on the study with 1.12 miles to the furthest gate. Although Heathrow airport is larger than Gatwick, it has a shorter journey for travellers to make and the maximum recorded distance was 0.76 miles.
The lengthiest reported is at Beijing Capital (Terminal 3) with a distance of two miles. London Luton airport has one of the smallest distances recorded between the entrance and gate, with a distance of 0.33 miles.
The varying distances to departure gates in airports around the world provide evidence of the most effectively laid out transport hubs. Although bigger airports will struggle to make walking distances smaller, some do provide more assistance than others in getting to the gate. The news is more of a concern for disabled travellers looking to make trips abroad. Some airports do often supply shuttles services but they do not always cover the whole journey.
The survey, originally conducted by Direct Line insurance, does not reflect the mode of travel that can be used on the way to the departure gate, walking is not always necessary.
Does it matter how long the journey to your departure gate is? Are you always in a rush and race to the gate? Do you struggle with the distance? Let us know your thoughts below.
