The cost of sending mobile-phone texts to other countries in Europe is slowly starting to drop. The European Union (EU) Telecoms Commissioner, Viviane Reding, set a deadline of 1 July for mobile phone companies to cut their texting charges. The EU challenged mobile phone companies to charge customers just a fraction more for texting abroad than the normal cost at home. Some phone companies have responded by cutting their charges. T Mobile has dropped the cost of sending a text from abroad from 40p to 25p, while O2 has cut its charge from 49p to 25p. Others have said they need more time to respond. Reding will announce on 18 July if she is to enforce a cap on charges for roaming texts and mobile internet access. The EU wants fees in every member country to be the same by 2011. Some mobile phone companies already offer international roaming packages. These generally charge standard UK rates for calls from overseas to UK numbers plus a small connection fee. There are also an increasing number of pre-paid international SIM cards available. These allow users to receive free calls and texts from UK phones in a variety of other countries. They generally also offer cheaper international text and call charges. Wanderlust readers can get an exclusive 20% off a go-sim international SIM card package here Do you use a mobile phone abroad?
