Insure safety on the slopes

The Foreign Office has issued safety advice for Brits lucky enough to find some snow on the ski slopes this winter
An accident on the slopes paired with an inappropriate insurance policy could leave travellers thousands of pounds out of pocket, the Foreign Office has warned.
Unseasonably warm weather has meant a dry start to the European ski season, and with snow-seekers looking further abroad safety is of even greater importance.
Research shows that one in five travellers are not taking out the appropriate insurance, despite common knowledge that winter sports accidents can rake up huge medical bills. This number increases to one in four with those aged between 15 and 24 years old.
The Foreign Office has issued advice to British skiers on the appropriate steps to take before and during a winter holiday, to avoid any unfortunate accidents and the cost that comes with them.
Take out a comprehensive insurance plan before you go; take into consideration your age, destination and all the activities you plan on participating in while you are away – whether it's sledging or snowboarding – and check the small print for any hidden clauses.
While you are there, know your limits. Drink responsibly while on holiday, as alcohol enters the blood stream faster at high altitude. If you plan on having a boozy lunch, give yourself a couple hours before hitting the slopes.
Cold weather makes muscles more prone to injury, so make sure you do some stretches, and warm up before taking to the slopes. A little goes a long way. Also be sure to keep hydrated, as the body dehydrates faster at high altitudes, so keep at the top of your game by drinking four to six litres a day.
Lastly, don't push yourself. Know what you are capable of, and don't go beyond your limits just to impress. Know what piste levels mean in different countries, as they do vary, and stick to those that you know you can handle. Be sensible if you plan to go off-track and keep up with avalanche forecasts.
