Indian airports on alert
4th December 2008
Three major airports in India have been put on high alert. This follows intelligence that the group who claimed responsibility for last week’s Mumbai attacks were targeting the airports.
Extra security checks are being carried out at Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore airports following the threat.
Passengers are being asked to arrive at these airports three hours before their flight is due to depart.
Unconfirmed reports in India say an email from the Deccan Mujahideen group, containing threats to hijack a plane at one of the airports, was received by security forces.
On Wednesday police defused an unexploded bomb that had lain undetected at Mumbai’s main railway station for a week.
Last week’s terror spree in Mumbai has claimed at least 188 lives.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is no longer advising against all but essential travel to the city but is advising travellers to “exercise caution around large public gatherings”.
