Access to a 'sacred' mountain in France has been banned as officials prepare for Mayan-apocalypse-believers to flock to the site
On 21 December 2012, the world is going to end. At least according to conspiracy theorists who believe that the end of the Mayan calendar will bring the apocalypse. New Age fanatics believe that the Pic de Bugarach in south-west France will burst open on this day to reveal an alien spaceship destined to save any nearby humans and carry them to safety...
In an attempt to stop the hordes of fanatics, journalists and the generally intrigued, French officials have have banned access to the mountain and to the namesake village at its foot on this date.
100 police and firefighters will be deployed to block access and monitor crowds at the site. Representative Eric Freysselinard said: “We are expecting a few people who believe this is the end of the world and people who are just curious. Above all, we are expecting lots of journalists.”
Documentaries and films, including the Hollywood blockbuster 2012, have promoted the idea that the world could end on 21 December. Guatemala, with a large population of Mayan descent, is holding a massive event to celebrate the apocalypse and a new dawn for humanity. Stars including Elton John, U2 and Bruce Springsteen will all be appearing and Dooms Day tours are being offered.
The Guatemalan Mayan alliance has condemned the event, saying that the government is distorting the significance of the date for monetary gain. They do not believe that the end of the world is imminent, but rather that the end of the calendar hails a time of personal and community change that will create a balance between nature and mankind.
