Fed up of queuing up at the counter to purchase your euros and dollars? The Post Office has today started trialling ATMs that will dispense those two currencies commission free. Thirteen Post Office branches, situated mainly in the south east of England, will initially trial the ATMs. Withdrawals can be made with a debit card from the Link network and the exchange rate is the same as that offered at the counter. This latest development is another nail in the coffin of the good old travellers cheque. The former staple of travellers’ wallets is almost completely obsolete. There are now a variety of ways you can get cash in foreign climes. There are ‘pre-loaded’ debit cards. These allow you to ‘load’ an amount of money onto them before you travel and then use them to withdraw money from ATMs overseas. And research by the UK’s payments body APACS found that £7.1 billion was withdrawn by UK debit and credit cards from overseas cash machines last year. Nationwide’s current account charges no fees for foreign ATM withdrawals. And Abbey has recently launched a new credit card called Zero, which is also fee free when used abroad. Nationwide and the Post Office already offered fee-free credit cards.
