Flying visits to South Pole set to take off
11th December 2007
If you ever wanted to truly follow in the footsteps of Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton, now’s your chance. Tour company Discover The World has just unveiled a trip for the truly intrepid to the geographic South Pole.
Its South Pole Adventure flies from Punta Arenas in Chile to the Patriot Hills base in Antarctica, landing on a natural runway formed of blue ice.
As soon as weather conditions allow, a six-hour flight takes the group to the international research station at the South Pole. Three hours are spent at the southernmost point on the planet, including photo opportunities, a presentation from one of the station’s scientists and a chance to get a unique passport stamp.
Due to the changeable weather conditions, only 44 travellers (11 per flight) on four flights will get to visit the South Pole each season. The first trips depart on 3, 10 and 29 December next year and 4 January 2009. If you’re thinking about going, you need to be able to allow ten days either side of the departure date in case the weather takes a turn for the worse.
The eight-day trip costs a whopping £17,944 per person, which includes return flights from Punta Arenas to Patriot Hills, return flights from Patriot Hills to the South Pole, transfers, seven nights’ full board accommodation in expedition tents and activities including hiking, cross country skiing and snowmobile tours.
