The fast road to Taj Mahal could cut the journey time by half (Dreamstime)

Fast road to Taj Mahal opens

10th August 2012

An expressway linking Agra – home to the Taj Mahal – to New Delhi has been opened, reportedly reducing travel time between the two cities by half

Taking just under four years to construct, the privately built expressway runs from Greater Noida to Agra and cost 120 billion rupees to build.

Officials say the fast road will decrease travelling time between the two cities and may further increase the number of visitors flocking to the white palace.

Travellers making the journey have an easier way to get to and from the iconic palace. However, the 165 kilometre (102 mile) toll road will cost 510 rupees to cross through, which equates to around £6 (US$9). Although travelling on it will be free until the 15 August, which marks India’s independence day.

Officials have said, the toll road will be used by tourists and locals alike and will also be gladly welcomed by businesses using the new transport link.

The Yamuna expressway was originally announced in 2001 and was designed to reduce congestion. The road is six lanes wide and will aim to ease traffic build up and create freer flowing movement for road users.

India has the second largest road network in the world and New Delhi announced in 2010 that they were going to add 28,000 kilometres of road to the existing highway network. Further plans to build townships along the expressway are in place.

I would always suggest just taking the train, it's 2 hours on the Shatabdi express, it's cheap, comfortable, relaxing, has AC with lunch......compare that with death defying roads in India...Always take the train, much easier.

I was on a new highway in India last week when the driver in an attempt to save a few minutes decided to start driving on the other side of the road straight into oncoming traffic.

Good point mattyboy, the roads are terrifying in much of India. I once saw a dead body on the road from Delhi - someone on a scooter who had been hit. The traffic didn't stop ;everything just veered round the body as best it could. And do the cows know not to wander across the new expressway?
