Europe’s terror alerts increase fear of attacks
4th October 2010
The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice to some large European countries, such as Germany and France, amid increasing worries over terrorism attacks
The UK’s current threat level has not changed, although it is currently rated as severe. This warns that ‘a terrorist attack is highly likely.’
The cautions for Western Europe have been issued after a number of bomb scares have occurred in major tourist attractions. The Eiffel Tower has been closed twice in the past two weeks, after bomb warnings were called in. The tower was evacuated and closed on both occasions, although nothing was found.
So far, travellers are not being discouraged from visiting Europe.
Home Secretary, Theresa May, has advised the public to, “report suspicious activity to the police in support of the efforts of our security services to discover, track and disrupt terrorist activity."
Whilst travelling, be sure to report any suspicious behaviour to the appropriate authorities.
The Foreign Office has not enforced travel restrictions to the European countries involved, but instead has revised its overall travel advice:
“Like other large European countries, the French authorities continue to consider that there is a high threat of terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.”
