Wanderlust writer wins Croatia's Golden Pen Award
12th June 2012
Long-term Wanderlust contributor David Atkinson has won the Zlatna Penkala (Golden Pen) Award for his enlightening article on the Dalmatian archipelago
Contributor to Wanderlust for over seven years, David Atkinson has won a prestigious Croatian award for his feature on the country's Dalmatian islands. Croatia's 1,244 Dalmatian Islands was originally published in the August/September 2011 edition of Wanderlust. You can view David's award-winning article online here.
David commented on winning the award: "I'm delighted to win for Wanderlust, especially as this story showed a new side to Croatia – the rural village traditions, the untouched walking trails and the local homestays. It's something so many people miss out on when visiting the Dalmatian archipelago."
The Zlatna Penkala (Golden Pen) Awards were established by the Croatian tourist board in 2004. The awards recognise the best travel pieces on Croatia across print and broadcast media. Each year, there are two winners – one from print and another from broadcast.
A representative of the Croatian tourist board explained what the awards are for: “The awards recognise the valuable contribution that return foreign journalists have made to reviving the country's tourism industry.”
Winners are decided by a special committee which consists of two representatives of the Croatian tourist board and the president of Croatia's journalist society. Nominees are submitted by the CNTB's country offices.
Why the golden pen? Back in 1907, inventor and engineer Slavoljub Pankala invented the first fountain pen and so the country is home to the universal scribbler.
