The Burmese government has appealed to investors to raise funds for a second airport to help the former capital city
State media announced last Thursday that the Burmese government is attempting to raise funds for a second international airport for the country's former capital Yangon. Appealing to investors, the government wants to improve the country's infrastructure to cope with the growing numbers of visitors.
The government plan to build the airport on the site of an old Japanese-built air strip from World War Two, located around 80km to the north of the city.
With recent reports of the country being unable to cope with the influx of visitors this announcement shows the government is keen to develop its infrastructure.
"The new international airport for Yangon is essential since the present Yangon International Airport will have reached its full capacity in terms of handling flights and passengers by the end of this year," a senior ministry official said.
The air transport directorate said in a separate announcement: "The Ministry of Transport would like to cooperate with local and foreign investors for the development of Hanthawady International Airport, and for upgrading and modernising some other domestic airports."
