Bomb blasts at Indonesian hotels
17th July 2009
Two bombs have exploded at hotels in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, killing at least nine people.
The bombs went off on Friday morning (17 July) at the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott hotels in the Mega Kuningan district of the city.
The Indonesian government has blamed terrorist groups for the attack, although no one has claimed responsibility. It’s believed the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers.
The bomb at the Ritz-Carlton ripped off the hotel’s facade.
Indonesia has been relatively peaceful since bomb attacks in Bali in October 2005.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is advising British travellers “to stay away from the Mega Kuningan district pending further announcements by the Indonesian National Police; and to avoid unnecessary journeys within central Jakarta for the time being”.
Australia’s government is advising travellers to “reconsider your need to travel to Indonesia”.
