Beat the crowds in Venice
27th January 2009
Want to go to Venice but don’t fancy being surrounded by thousands of fellow travellers? Help is at hand after the city announced it’s introducing a new website showing how many people visit the city at different times of the year.
In an attempt to encourage people to book trips out of season, the new
current issue of Wanderlust magazine explains, the city is struggling to cope with mass tourism. Up to 250,000 people can congregate on the city on a busy summer day.
The city is increasing fees for attractions, transport and services that are not bought in advance on busy days in an attempt to manage visitor numbers. The new website will offer discounts on everything from accommodation to the city’s famous vaporetto water taxis to museums to public toilets. For example, spending a penny on a busy day will now cost you more than a few cents if you don’t pay upfront – €3 (£2.80) to be precise.
"This is a major step in making tourism in Venice more sustainable," the city’s Deputy Mayor Michele Vianello told a press conference in Rome.
