A South African Feast for all
5th September 2008
60 lucky Wanderlust subscribers and their guests enjoyed a feast of South African food and drink in a top London restaurant this week.
The two South African Feast evenings, organised in association with South Africa Tourism, offered a tasting menu of modern dishes matched with wines.
Subscribers tucked into treats including miniature bunny chow, ostrich carpaccio, lentil bobotie, crayfish bisque, springbok and desserts such as milktart and malva pudding.
The evenings were held at London’s Hoxton Apprentice, a restaurant with a very special connection to South Africa.
South African chef and food expert Prue Leith set up the Hoxton Apprentice in conjunction with Training For Life, a charity that offers unemployed young people a chance to train for careers in the hospitality industry.
As part of the South Africa Feast promotion, ten trainees from London were sent to Prue Leith’s Chefs Academy near Pretoria to learn how to prepare and serve the menu.
Lyn Hughes, Wanderlust's editor-in-chief, said afterwards: "These evenings have been fantastic. The South African food was terrific and a real relevation, including some world-class vegetarian options. The dedication of the team at the Hoxton Apprentice was a joy to experience. And, of course, the guests were inspiring and fun. Well, they were all Wanderlust readers!"
If you want to experience the Feast for yourself, the tasting menu will continue to be available at the Hoxton Apprentice next week. For more information and to book, go to the Apprentice’s website (www.hoxtonapprentice.com)
