A Dull and Boring partnership

8th June 2012

The village of Dull in Scotland has linked up with Boring in America making for probably the world's most interminable affiliation

Life in Dull is a little bit boring. Not boring enough, it would seem, for its residents who are delighted to see it linked with the American town of Boring in Oregon. These 'sister communities' are hoping the pairing will bring in tourists on both sides of the Atlantic.

Dull is a village of 84 people nestled in the valley of the river Tay in Perthshire while Boring is home to more than 10,000. This means an official twinning is out of the question but it hasn't stopped the association going ahead thanks to a favourable vote by Boring Community Planning Organisation earlier this week.

Residents of Dull are planning a street party on 23 June in celebration. It is thanks to the suggestion of Elizabeth Leighton, who lives near the Perthshire village, that the idea took root. Having stumbled across Boring on a cycling trip in the USA, Leighton proposed the wearisome plan to the local council, who immediately entered into dreary talks with Boring's planning organisation.

“The party will show that we are neither dull nor boring," said Marjorie Keddie, chairman of Dull and Weem community council. “We are also excited at the prospect of a new road sign, which will say something like 'Dull, in association with Boring' or 'in sisterhood with Boring'. I'm sure it will stop a few people in their tracks for photos.”
