Grant Hutchison's association with Wanderlust started in 1998, when he won an assignment to Chile in their annual travel-writing competition. He has felt favourably disposed towards Wanderlust, Chile and Bill Bryson (the competition judge) ever since.
He likes to combine his interests in writing, travel, natural history and geography, and so (after reporting back from Chile in 2000) he has written for Wanderlust on topics as varied as national enclaves, the aurora borealis, bioluminescence, isolated islands, singing sand dunes, eclipses and the International Date Line, as well as obscure corners of the world like Tuva, Lord Howe Island, Khiva and Nauru.
He has written pieces on word origins for the British Medical Journal, and on natural phenomena for the Scotsman newspaper. His humorous writings about the Scottish highlands have been collected in two books: Munro's Fables and The Complete Lachlan & Walking Types. He was one of the developers of the 3D astronomy simulator software, Celestia.
Current travel interests centre on hot and cold deserts. To that end, Grant and his wife Marion have travelled in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Svalbard, Franz Josef Land and the Antarctic Peninsula, as well as the Namib, Kalahari, Atacama, Gobi and Kyzyl Kum deserts.
