WIN! A 12-day trip for two to Burma

Closing date: 8th February

Temple-studded countryside. Glistening gilded pagodas twinkling in the sinking sun. Sleepy stilt villages perched over crystal waters. Burma (Myanmar) is a special place, and whether wandering its ancient pagodas or rural villages, it still evokes an unhurried way of life seldom found elsewhere. And there’s truly no better way to experience all that this unique country offers than in the company of the locals who know it so well.

TravelLocal clearly feel the same, specialising in bespoke travel itineraries, created with a handpicked selection of local experts. TravelLocal’s bespoke trips help benefit and support communities across the 44 destinations they cover worldwide, at the same time as offering a real insight into the places you visit. Now you and a friend have the chance to see Burma’s most-famous bits through local eyes on a 12-day trip…

Breathtaking Burma

The landscapes on offer across Burma are as diverse as it gets. Begin your trip in the fabled city of Mandalay. Beyond all that myth and verse lies the reality of a land packed with pagodas, monasteries and teahouses. Next make for one of the country’s most iconic sights, the shimmering waters of Inle Lake. Fringed by marshes, a haven for rare migratory birds, and speckled with floating gardens and stilt villages, at Inle you can also follow the famous leg-rowing fishermen as they glide across its surface.

Away from the lake, take a day-trip to the hundreds of crumbling stupas that form the Shwe Indein Pagoda complex – many only partly reclaimed from the creeping jungle. Then, having got a taste for Buddhist monuments, make for Bagan. Here, vast swathes of temples (easily explored by bicycle) litter the plains, affording a packed day’s exploration. Climb the larger pagodas at dusk to see the whole area lit up in amber light, framed by distant grey mountains.

Finally, head south for the dramatic karst peaks of Hpa-An, a treasure trove of cave temples and rock formations. Once the capital of ‘British Burma’, Mawlamyine has more pagodas as well as the largest reclining Buddha in the country. Finish your trip amid the palm-lined rice fields and rubber plantations of Bilu Kyun (Ogre Island).

Unlock Burma’s hidden wonders with TravelLocal’s locally based experts, planning your trip with those who know it best while ensuring more of your money ends up in the local economy. Sounds good to us.
