The Canadian travel writer talks about the disappointment of Niagra Falls, the joys of Marrakesh and the joys of solitude near Lake Superior
Issue 80 | June/July 2006
Mountain, desert, ocean or jungle – which are you?
Ocean – for the prospect of an open horizon.
Where was your biggest travel disappointment?
Niagara Falls – the one-time honeymoon capital of America, though not because the falls are said to be most American brides’ second-biggest disappointment.
Where lives up to the hype?
Marrakesh: from the days of the hippie trail to the arrival of the first easyJet flight, the red city – and the irrepressible Marrakchis – have never failed to cast a spell.
What’s your favourite hotel or place to stay?
In a tent in Quetico, a 4,600 sq km wilderness park of 1,000 tangled rivers to the west of Lake Superior, listening to the haunting cry of the loons.
If you had a magic carpet where would you go right now?
Isfahan in Iran, to stand alone again in the airy, feminine, exquisite Sheikh Lotfollah mosque, the most beautiful building in the world.
Where or what is next on your wish list?
Fly Me To the Moon in Tokyo – a Japanese love hotel that features suites with pneumatic beds surrounded by wrap-around video screens.
