I live in the New Forest, and the absolute worst thing you can do is touch the ponies. They are not tame, weigh up to 500kg, can kill with one kick, and are certainly not to be encouraged to interact with tourists. There are signs up all over the forest saying "Don't touch the ponies" and yet in the first paragraph this is exactly what the author does. Not good & very irresponsible :(
The ponies are all owned by local people called commoners, and every year there are pony fatalities due to tourists feeding them crisps, ice cream etc. The ponies then associate people with food and barge through picnics, injuring people. Tourists also get hurt when they try to pet a foal causing the mare to act defensively, biting or kicking the naive tourists.
Please please amend this article to say she looked but didn't touch.
